LGBTQIA+ Healthcare

A doctor who actually gets it.

Inclusive, expert primary care for Cape Town's LGBTQIA+ community since 2019, when Dr Tomson joined the practice.

You should not have to spend the first part of a consultation managing how your doctor is going to react. At MyFamilyGP, you can skip that part. We have been offering dedicated, expert LGBTQIA+ primary care since 2019, when Dr Anastacia Tomson joined the practice. Our approach is built from the inside — Dr Tomson is herself a queer, trans doctor, and she refined her skills in LGBTQIA+ and trans-focused care at Callen-Lorde Community Health Centre in New York City, one of the world's leading queer health centres.

LGBTQIA+ patients deserve the same standard of general medical care as everyone else — and in areas where the standard has historically been poor, they deserve better. That is what we try to provide.

Who this is for.

What we cover.

What makes MyFamilyGP different here.

Most practices that call themselves LGBTQIA+-friendly mean they will be polite. We mean something more specific: our doctors have trained in LGBTQIA+ health, follow the latest evidence in this area, and in Dr Tomson's case, have helped produce that evidence. The difference matters in a consultation.

Dr Anastacia Tomson — Practice owner, co-author of South Africa's inaugural guideline on gender-affirming hormone therapy, refined her LGBTQIA+ and trans-focused practice at Callen-Lorde in New York City, and a queer, trans doctor caring for the LGBTQIA+ community at MyFamilyGP since 2019.

Frequently asked questions.

Is there an LGBTQIA+-friendly GP in Sea Point?

Yes. MyFamilyGP at Suite 404, 4th Floor, Sea Point Medical Centre, 11 Kloof Road, has been offering LGBTQIA+-affirming primary care since 2019. Dr Anastacia Tomson is a nationally recognised expert in this area. No referral is needed — simply book online or call us.

Do I need to disclose my identity to book?

You do not need to disclose anything you are not ready to share. What we will ask at registration is two practical things:

  • What to call you — the name we use in the consultation and on file when our team addresses you.
  • What name to write on your invoice — and it is okay if these two names are different.

If you plan to claim from medical aid or insurance, the invoice name needs to match the name your government uses for you, so the scheme can process the claim. If you are not claiming back, you can have your invoice in whatever name you prefer.

Everything else is yours to share at your own pace during the consultation. We create the space — you decide what to do with it.

Can I get HIV testing and PrEP at MyFamilyGP?

Yes. Rapid HIV testing is available during any consultation, and we can assess your eligibility for PrEP, initiate it if appropriate, and provide ongoing monitoring.

Do you have experience with trans patients?

Yes, considerable experience. Dr Tomson is one of South Africa's leading clinicians in transgender healthcare and co-authored the country's first gender-affirming hormone therapy guideline. See our Gender-Affirming Care page for more.
