MBChB (University of Pretoria, 2009) · Mandela Washington Fellow

If you have been navigating the healthcare system as a trans, non-binary, or gender-diverse person — or as someone whose symptoms haven't been properly explained — you already know how exhausting it can be to find a doctor who actually understands. Anastacia is that doctor.

She is one of South Africa's leading clinicians in gender-affirming medicine and LGBTQIA+ primary care. She co-led the drafting of South Africa's inaugural clinical guideline on gender-affirming hormone therapy — a process that required years of research, advocacy, and clinical synthesis, and that has shaped how gender-affirming care is delivered nationally. She refined her LGBTQIA+ and trans-focused care at Callen-Lorde Community Health Centre in New York City — one of the world's leading centres for queer and trans primary care.

Anastacia also has a strong clinical interest in rare diseases — the “zebras”, as the community itself often puts it. Patients with conditions that have been dismissed, misdiagnosed, or shuffled between specialists for years find someone here who will take the diagnostic work seriously.

Anastacia trained at the University of Pretoria and built her clinical foundation across Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and the Western Cape before settling in Sea Point. She was a Mandela Washington Fellow, studying public health and policy in Ohio and doing professional development with Equal Rights Washington in Seattle. She managed clinical trials in Cape Town before joining MyFamilyGP in 2019, and became managing partner in 2023.

She is also a queer, trans, autistic doctor — which is not incidental. It means she understands what it feels like to need healthcare to be safer, and she has built this practice around making it so.

Clinical interests.

  • Gender-affirming hormone therapy — assessment, initiation, monitoring, and long-term management
  • LGBTQIA+ primary care across all presentations
  • Transgender and non-binary health, including those starting their journey and those already on hormones
  • Rare diseases — diagnosis and management of the “zebras”, particularly for patients who have not been properly believed elsewhere
  • Sexual health and HIV care
  • Navigating healthcare systems for patients who have been failed by them before
  • Inclusive care as clinical methodology, not just policy

A word from Anastacia.

"Choosing a doctor is personal. For a lot of our patients, it has also historically been stressful — a calculation about whether it is safe to be honest, whether you will be judged, whether you will leave feeling worse than when you arrived. That is what I am trying to fix, one consultation at a time. Come and tell us what is actually going on. We will take it from there."

Outside of the practice, Anastacia runs, builds LEGO, and writes. She has a collection of fountain pens and vibrant inks she mostly admires rather than uses, and she cooks vegan food with considerable conviction.
