Iron Infusion

Get your energy back, properly.

IV iron infusions at our Sea Point practice — Venofer or Monofer, dosed and scheduled according to your blood results.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common — and most under-treated — conditions we see in general practice. Tiredness that does not shift, difficulty concentrating, feeling cold, breathlessness on exertion: these are symptoms that often get dismissed or attributed to lifestyle. When iron is the cause, an infusion can make a significant difference, quickly.

MyFamilyGP offers IV iron infusions at our Sea Point practice. We handle the full clinical process: assessment to confirm the diagnosis, the infusion itself in a comfortable in-practice setting, and follow-up to check that your iron levels have responded.

What the process looks like.

Step 1 — Assessment

Before any infusion is given, we confirm the diagnosis with blood tests: iron studies, ferritin, haemoglobin, and other relevant markers. Pathology is done off-site by an external provider, at fees they determine and bill you separately. We interpret the results in the context of your symptoms and history — iron deficiency has causes, and we try to understand what is driving yours, not just treat the number.

Step 2 — The infusion

The infusion takes place in the practice. Session length and how many sessions are needed depend on your particular blood results and the preparation chosen — typically between one and three hours per session. You can bring something to read or watch. A doctor monitors you throughout.

Step 3 — Follow-up

We recheck your iron levels at an appropriate interval to confirm the treatment has worked and to plan any ongoing management.

Medical aid pre-authorisation.

Iron infusions carry a meaningful cost, and many patients want to pre-authorise the treatment with their medical aid first. We will support you with that process. A few things to know:

  • MyFamilyGP remains a cash practice. Pre-authorisation does not change the way we bill — you still pay at the time of the procedure, and your scheme reimburses according to your plan. See our Cash Practice Notice and Medical Aid Notice for the full position.
  • Once your pre-authorisation has been confirmed by your scheme, we will set the appointment.
  • Patients with pre-authorisation must share all relevant documentation from their medical aid with us ahead of the appointment so we can ensure everything aligns and your claim has the best chance of being honoured.
